It has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis and is a potent antagonist of the ns3 protease. 2-Aminohex-5-enoic acid binds to the hydrophobic pocket of the ns3 protease, which is a transmembrane protein that cleaves viral polyproteins into smaller proteins. This binding prevents the formation of an enzyme complex with its substrate, thereby inhibiting proteolytic activity. The reaction mechanism of this process involves nucleophilic attack on the carbonyl carbon and formation of an epoxide intermediate.
