3-Methyl-4-phenyl-2,5-furandione is a benzylic enhancer that can be used for the synthesis of substituted furans. It enhances the reactivity of methane and benzylic compounds by substituent effects. 3-Methyl-4-phenyl-2,5-furandione has a significant enhancement effect on yields and efficiency in reactions of substituted furans. The substituent effects are rationalized through postulating that they are due to electronic interactions with the substrate and 3-methyl-4-phenyl-2,5-furandione. This reaction also shows chemoselectivity with respect to the isomeric products formed.
