Bromovinyltrimethylsilane is a reducing agent that can be used to prepare an aldehyde from an alcohol. It is synthesized by the reaction of bromine and trimethylsilyl chloride with lithium metal in liquid ammonia at -78°C. The product is insoluble in water, chloroform, or ether. Bromovinyltrimethylsilane has been shown to react with chloride ions to form a chlorosilane, which can be used as an intermediate for other organic reactions. Bromovinyltrimethylsilane can also be used as a reducer in cross-coupling reactions with isomeric halides and alkene substrates. The mechanism for this process involves the formation of a reactive organobromide species that reacts with the substrate to create new bonds.
