Ethyl azetidine-3-carboxylate is an experimental drug that is being tested for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It is a competitive antagonist of the histamine H4 receptor and enhances insulin secretion. This molecule has been shown to reduce weight gain in high-fat diet-fed mice and to have a positive effect on glucose tolerance. In humans, it has been shown to be safe and well tolerated at oral doses up to 300 mg per day. The drug target for this molecule is the histamine H4 receptor, which is located on pancreatic β cells. Ethyl azetidine-3-carboxylate interacts with this receptor subtype, leading to a decrease in blood sugar levels by stimulating insulin release from pancreatic β cells.
