Dimethylsildenafil is a research tool that belongs to the class of ligands, which are used to study protein interactions. It is an activator of cGMP-specific phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) and can be used as a pharmacological tool for studying ion channels. Dimethylsildenafil has been shown to bind to the cGMP-binding site on the PDE5 enzyme, which is responsible for inhibiting the production of cyclic GMP. This inhibition leads to increased levels of cGMP in the cell, which causes relaxation of smooth muscles and enhances blood flow in specific areas. Dimethylsildenafil has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis in certain cells, but not others.
