5,7-Dibromo-8-methoxyquinoline is a potential anticancer drug that inhibits the activity of topoisomerase II and III. It has been shown to have cytotoxic effects against human colon carcinoma cells and rat brain cancer cells in vitro. 5,7-Dibromo-8-methoxyquinoline also inhibits the growth of brain tumor cells in vivo. The mechanism of action is not well understood, but it may be due to changes in cell membrane permeability or oxidative damage caused by reactive oxygen species. This agent has been shown to inhibit the formation of centroids in DNA when applied to a DNA solution in vitro. In addition, it has been shown to have photophysical properties under different conditions (e.g., pH).
