Sodium citrate is a salt of citric acid and sodium. It is used as a matrix for the detection of organic anions in urine or plasma by electrochemical detector. The matrix effect of the sodium citrate increases the sensitivity of the detection, and it has been shown to be effective in detecting metabolic disorders, such as hypercalcemia, hyperuricemia, and hypokalemia. Sodium citrate also interacts with potassium dichromate to form copolymers that can be used for genome DNA sequencing. These copolymers have been shown to be effective in determining the origin of bacteria, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium avium complex, in biological samples such as maternal blood cells and cell lysates. Plasma mass spectrometry is used to detect drug levels in blood samples by identifying metabolites using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS).
