4'-(Methylamino)acetophenone is a multistep reaction. It can be described as an intramolecular nucleophilic substitution reaction. The second step is the addition of a carbon dioxide molecule to form acetophenone and dimethyl carbonate, which is then hydrolyzed to give 4-methoxybenzaldehyde and methanol.
