It has been isolated from the dry weight of Caco-2 cells with all-trans-retinoic acid as an internal standard and analyzed with magnetic resonance spectroscopy. β-Apo-13-carotenone has been shown to have biological functions, such as the inhibition of lipid peroxidation and the stimulation of cell proliferation. It also inhibits the uptake of cholesterol by macrophages, which may lead to a decrease in atherosclerosis. The analytical method for this compound is gas chromatography/mass spectrometry.
