Mezlocillin sodium is a cell wall-active agent that inhibits the synthesis of bacterial cell walls. It binds to the penicillin-binding proteins in the bacterial cell wall, thereby preventing the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. Mezlocillin sodium has an antibacterial efficacy against most gram-positive bacteria and some gram-negative bacteria. The drug is activated by sulbactam, which hydrolyzes mezlocillin to mezlocillin monohydrochloride, its active form. Sulbactam also has a synergistic effect on mezlocillin's antibacterial activity when used together with other antibiotics such as ampicillin or amoxicillin.
