Methyl (2S)-1-methyl-5-oxopyrrolidine-2-carboxylate is a metabolite of histone deacetylase inhibitors that can be used as a biomarker for the activity of these drugs. It has been shown to act as an effector protein and inhibit histone methylation, which is involved in DNA replication and cell division.
