The discovery of this insecticide was first reported in 1887, but it was not until 1945 that its chemical structure was determined and its insecticidal properties were demonstrated. 3-Iodophenyl acetate has a molecular formula C8H7IO2 and a molecular weight of 208.19 g/mol. This compound is poorly soluble in water, but readily dissolves in benzene or other organic solvents such as chloroform, ether, or acetone.
