E/Z Ajoene-d14 is a synthetic derivative of allicin. It has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, fungi, and yeast. E/Z Ajoene-d14 has also been found to have an anti-inflammatory effect in vitro. The compound inhibits the production of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) and nitric oxide (NO) in response to oxidative injury in vitro. E/Z Ajoene-d14 also has a hypoglycemic effect when administered orally to mice, suggesting that it may be useful for the treatment of diabetes mellitus type II.
E/Z Ajoene-d14 is synthesized by reacting allicin with either sodium or potassium hydroxide in methanol at room temperature under argon gas. This reaction produces a mixture of both E and Z isomers of ajoene-d14, which can then be purified by preparative
