Abacavir-d4 is a reconstituted solution of the antiretroviral drug abacavir. It is used in the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, specifically in combination with other antiretroviral drugs. Abacavir-d4 is used to monitor the population parameters and pharmacokinetics of abacavir. The preparation can be reconstituted by adding 2 ml of sterile water for injection or bacteriostatic water for injection to each ampoule. Abacavir-d4 has been shown to be safe and effective in women who are pregnant or breast-feeding and can be taken with other medicines, such as tenofovir. This drug has also been shown to reduce viral load in HIV-positive patients who are on antiretroviral therapy.
