Ganciclovir is an antiviral drug that inhibits viral DNA synthesis by preventing the formation of viral DNA strands. It is used in the treatment of cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis, herpes simplex virus, varicella-zoster virus, and Epstein-Barr virus. Ganciclovir is a prodrug that needs to be activated by phosphorylation. The active form of ganciclovir is a competitive inhibitor of human DNA polymerase alpha and beta. This drug can be administered orally as an oral prodrug or intravenously as an injection solution. As a result, it has been used for many years for the treatment of AIDS patients with CMV retinitis or other viral infections in immunocompromised individuals. Ganciclovir can also be used as a diagnostic agent to detect replication competent viruses in fetal bovine serum samples and cell cultures.
