2-Isobutyl-4-methyl-1,3-dioxolane is a colorless liquid that is used in the production of polymers. It is an important precursor to various chemicals including hexanal, furfural, fatty acids, aldehydes, and isobutyl. 2-Isobutyl-4-methyl-1,3-dioxolane has been shown to react with sulfur dioxide to produce hydrogen sulfide which can be toxic if inhaled. The chemical also reacts with trimethyl orthoformate to produce caproic acid and formaldehyde. 2-Isobutyl-4-methyl-1,3-dioxolane has a strong astringent odor.
