3,7-Dimethyl-1-octen-3-ol is a natural compound that is found in the oils of a variety of plants. It has been shown to have antimicrobial properties and inhibits the growth of bacteria on metal oxide surfaces. 3,7-Dimethyl-1-octen-3-ol also has the ability to disrupt the cell membrane by binding to it and preventing ion transport across the membrane. This may be due to its ability to bind with metal ions such as aluminum oxide or calcium carbonate. 3,7-Dimethyl-1-octen-3-ol has been shown to inhibit geranyl diphosphate synthase which is an enzyme involved in aromatic biosynthesis. It can also react with functional groups such as hydroxyl or carbonyl groups, producing an analog that can be used for chromatographic methods. The optimum pH for this natural product is between 5 and 7.
