2,4-dimethylheptan-3-one is the reaction product of 2,4-dimethylcyclohexanone and 3-methylpentanal. It is a pheromone that has been shown to attract male mice. The linear calibration curve for this molecule was generated by using known concentrations of 2,4-dimethylheptan-3-one in a gas chromatograph. Chromatographic science can be used to identify the presence of other molecules in a sample by using organic acids as surrogates for other chemical compounds. Solid phase microextraction can be used to extract chemical compounds from a solid material and deuteration can be used to alter the physical properties of a substance.
