SALEN is a chelator that binds to metal ions and prevents them from reacting with other molecules. This drug has been shown to be effective against iron overload in animals, as well as preventing accumulation of toxic levels of heavy metals in the body. SALEN is also used for the treatment of Wilson’s disease, a rare genetic disorder caused by an accumulation of copper in the body. It can also reduce levels of iron in the blood for patients with non-transfusional hemochromatosis. SALEN is not active in water and should be used only on an empty stomach due to its low solubility.
