5-Methyl-3-heptanol is a volatile oil with a supramolecular structure. It has been shown to have potent relaxant effects on the gastrointestinal tract, which are due to its ability to cause dehydration and reactions at high temperatures. 5-Methyl-3-heptanol also has bifunctional properties that allow it to act as a hydrogenating agent at higher temperatures, as well as react with monoalcohols, which results in its viscosity being increased. The dipole of 5-methyl-3-heptanol can be determined using techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. This chemical is highly volatile and can be found in the air of certain environments, such as near gas stations and factories.
