2-Hydroxy-3-((1-hydroxy-2-methylpropan-2-yl)amino)propane-1-sulfonic acid (HPA) is a chelate ring which has been studied for its role in the energy efficiency of biological reactions. HPA was found to be an inhibitor of the enzyme fatty acid synthase, which is involved in the production of fat molecules. The results from these studies suggest that HPA may be useful as a therapeutic drug for obesity and diabetes.
HPA has also been used to create monoclonal antibodies, which are used in biological studies and as drugs for cancer treatment. These antibodies are created by joining together fragments of DNA that have been cut with restriction enzymes, producing fragments of DNA with specific antibody binding sites. In one study, HPA was used to produce a particular antibody fragment called Fab'2. This study found that when Fab'2 was used to bind with erythrocytes
