4-Chloro-DL-tryptophan is a synthetic amino acid that can be used in the study of plant physiology. It has been synthesized by the reaction of L-amino acids with ethylene and ammonium sulfate, and purified from the corresponding racemic mixture. 4-Chloro-DL-tryptophan is an enantiomer, which means that it is not a mirror image of its counterpart. The compound was first obtained from pisum sativum, an organism that belongs to the family Fabaceae. This compound is found in small amounts in plants, but its biosynthesis has not been studied yet.
