DDC binds to the active site of the integrase enzyme and prevents it from performing its function in viral replication. This compound has a potentiometric transfer activity and can be used as a probe to study the interactions of metal ions with proteins. DDC has been shown to inhibit HIV-1 infection in vitro by binding to nucleotides and inhibiting RNA synthesis. DDC has also been shown to have medicinal properties, such as reducing cholesterol levels and preventing atherosclerosis.
