1,2-Epoxyeicosane is an exocrine gland secretion that is excreted in the form of a viscous liquid. It is primarily used in the manufacture of dental plates and fillings. It is also used to determine the density of fluids, such as water or oil, by measuring the ratio of their weight to volume. In addition, 1,2-epoxyeicosane can be used as a precursor in the production of epoxy resins. This process involves ring-opening with a strong acid, followed by reaction with an alcohol to yield an epoxide. The epoxy resin can be polymerized with a dihydroxyl compound (e.g., ethylene glycol) to give polyepoxide resins or with phenol or cresol to produce polyurethanes.
