Piperonyl butoxide is an insecticide that belongs to the class of pyrethroid compounds. It has been shown to have a matrix effect, which means it reacts with other chemicals in the environment to form new compounds. Piperonyl butoxide is used as a synergist for carbaryl and organophosphates, enhancing their toxicity and increasing their effectiveness. Piperonyl butoxide also prevents the degradation of hydrogen chloride by hydrolysis and stabilizes chemical compounds against oxidation. Piperonyl butoxide has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of aerobic bacteria such as Aerobacter aerogenes. This compound may be detected in blood serum or urine samples as an indicator of exposure to this chemical. The presence of this compound in biological treatment systems can reduce nitrification rates by interfering with nitrogen metabolism.
