10-Chloroanthracene-9-methanol is a potent inhibitor of β-glucosidase, an enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of the 1,2 glycosidic bond of cellulose. It is a derivative of anthracene with a methoxy substituent on the 9th carbon. 10-Chloroanthracene-9-methanol is synthesized from 1-deoxynojirimycin using palladium catalysis and has been shown to be more potent than other compounds in inhibiting β-glucosidase. It has been shown to have a fluorescence emission maximum at 514 nm and a protonation constant at pH 7.5
