Ampicillin-sulbactam is a combination of two drugs, ampicillin and sulbactam. Ampicillin is a penicillin-type antibiotic that inhibits bacterial growth by preventing the formation of the bacterial cell wall. Sulbactam is an inhibitor of beta-lactamase enzymes that are produced by certain bacteria to break down antibiotics such as ampicillin. This combination drug is used to treat infections caused by bacteria that are resistant to ampicillin alone. Ampicillin-sulbactam has also been studied for its potential anticancer properties. It has been shown to inhibit kinases in human and Chinese hamster cells, leading to apoptosis or programmed cell death in cancer cells. Additionally, an analog of sulbactam has been developed as a medicinal tumor inhibitor that shows promise in treating various types of cancer.
