The reaction is driven by the transfer of electrons from the methanol to the lithium bis(nonafluorobutanesulfonyl)imide and chloride ions, which are generated during the process. Lithium Bis(nonafluorobutanesulfonyl)imide interacts with the pyridinium cation and piperazine, which can be used to lower its melting point.
