Metoprolol is a beta-blocker, which is used in the treatment of hypertension, angina pectoris, and arrhythmias. Metoprolol fumarate is a prodrug that is hydrolyzed to metoprolol in vivo. It has been shown that metoprolol fumarate binds to fatty acids on the surface of lipid bilayers, causing disruption of hydrogen bonds and a change in the basic structure of the lipids. The clinical response to metoprolol fumarate was shown by vitro tests using dispersive solid-phase extraction to be dose-dependent. Metoprolol fumarate also has a high affinity for ATP channels and can be used as a diagnostic agent for various conditions including atrial tachycardia and ventricular arrhythmia. Metoprolol fumarate can also be used as an anti-arrhythmic drug for the prevention of cardiac events such as sudden cardiac death or my
