Piclamilast is a low-potency, non-selective, reversible inhibitor of phosphodiesterase (PDE) enzymes. It has been shown to have therapeutic potential for inflammatory bowel disease and asthma. Piclamilast blocks the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as eosinophil cationic protein and basic proteins in response to lipopolysaccharide (LPS).
Piclamilast inhibits the inflammatory response induced by LPS by reducing the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including IL-8, IL-1β, TNFα and IL-6.
Piclamilast also has inhibitory effects on protein kinases such as c-jun phosphorylation and polymerase chain reaction.
