3-o-(E)-p-Coumaroylbetulin (3-ECB) is a philippinensis isolate that has been shown to have anti-cancer properties. 3-ECB has been shown to be cytotoxic against cancer cells in vitro, and it inhibits the growth of breast cancer cells in vivo. The mechanism of action for 3-ECB is not well understood but may involve inhibition of protein synthesis. 3-ECB also binds to DNA and RNA in a manner similar to other betulinic acid compounds and inhibits tumor cell growth by inducing apoptosis. Susceptibility testing demonstrated that 3-ECB is active against various human cancer cell lines including those derived from leukemia, colon, prostate, breast, and lung cancers.
