Carisbamate is a synthetic, non-competitive antagonist of the ryanodine receptor. Carisbamate has been shown to be effective against seizures induced by pentylenetetrazol and electroshock in rats. This drug also blocks neuronal death induced by kainic acid and reduces seizure frequency in patients with refractory epilepsy. Carisbamate has been shown to have no significant interactions with other drugs and does not affect mitochondrial membrane potential. It does not inhibit the function of 5-HT2 receptors, which are responsible for serotonin release.
