Methyl 3-formylcyclopentane-1-carboxylate is an organic compound that is structurally related to the neurotransmitter GABA. This molecule has been shown to be a potent activator of neuronal receptors, such as GABA receptors, and may be of therapeutic use in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. The stereoselectivity of this molecule can be attributed to its single crystal x-ray diffraction pattern that was obtained from a murine neuron. Methyl 3-formylcyclopentane-1-carboxylate also has medicinal properties, as it is able to inhibit certain bacteria by linking to the respiratory chain and inhibiting mitochondrial function.
