3,4,4',5-Tetrachlorobiphenyl is a synthetic chemical that is metabolized by cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes. It has been shown to induce CYP1A enzyme activity in vitro and in vivo. 3,4,4',5-Tetrachlorobiphenyl binds to the receptor binding domain of CYP1A1, which leads to increased levels of CYP1A1 protein and maximal response. The induction of CYP1A may be due to biphenyl metabolites.
