Thermospermine tetrahydrochloride is a chemical compound that is used in chemical biology. Thermospermine tetrahydrochloride has been shown to inhibit protease activity and cell lysis, which may be due to its ability to bind to cytosolic proteins. It also blocks the cation channel, preventing the influx of cations into the cell, leading to an increase in membrane potential and cell lysis. This compound has been demonstrated as a model system for polyamine metabolism by inhibiting spermine synthetase and spermidine/spermine N1-acetyltransferase. Thermospermine tetrahydrochloride can also be used as a fluorescent tag for biological samples, such as plant physiology or monoclonal antibodies.
