The reaction system was studied using liquid phase hydrogenation of pyridones with RuCl(p-cymene)((R)-binap). Kinetic data for the hydrogenations were obtained, including the kinetic constants for hydrogenation of pyridones by RuCl(p-cymene)((R)-binap). Hydrogenations of a series of functional groups with this catalyst were studied, revealing that it is stereoselective and can selectively hydrogenate one functional group over another. Impurities found in the product are discussed.
