Gardiquimod is a synthetic compound that belongs to the group of immunomodulators. It activates the cyclin D2 protein, which is involved in the cell signaling pathways. Gardiquimod induces apoptosis and inhibits tumor cell growth by activating the signal pathways in prostate cancer cells. In addition, it has potent antitumor activity against colorectal cancer cells and melanoma cells. Gardiquimod also induces the production of proinflammatory cytokines from human macrophages, leading to lysis of cancer cells. The polymerase chain reaction has shown that gardiquimod binds to toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) with high affinity and can induce photochemical properties.
