It reacts with ethanolamine to form 2,2'-dibromoethyl ether, which then reacts with nitrobenzene to produce the carcinogenic compound 4-nitrophenol. This compound induces apoptosis by inhibiting DNA synthesis and protein synthesis. The reaction time for this process is about 1 hour at room temperature.
