(S)-3-Amino-hexahydro-2-azepinone is a metabolite of the amino acid lysine (Lys) that is produced by Corynebacterium glutamicum. It has been shown to have antimycobacterial activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium avium complex. This compound also inhibits C. glutamicum growth, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the synthesis of L-lysine from D-glucose. The recombinant protein S-(hydroxymethyl)glutathione reductase (SHGR) was found in C. glutamicum and Brevibacterium sp., but not in Corynebacterium sp., suggesting that SHGR is not an essential enzyme for these bacteria.
