3-Hydroxy-4-phenylazetidin-2-one (3HAZ) is a potent antitumor agent in the multidrug class that inhibits DNA synthesis by inhibiting the activity of DNA polymerases. It has been shown to be active against drug-resistant cancer cells. 3HAZ has been shown to have anticancer activity in vivo and in vitro, which may be due to its ability to induce apoptosis and necrosis, respectively. This compound also has an efficient method for preparing the taxane docetaxel as a byproduct. 3HAZ is a phenylazetidine derivative that was identified as a possible taxane precursor during screening for inhibitors of human DNA polymerase alpha.
