3-(1H-Indol-3-yl)-2,5-dihydro-1H-pyrrole-2,5-dione is a neuroprotective agent that has shown anti-inflammatory properties in a number of animal models. The compound inhibits the production of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines through its inhibition of phosphoinositide 3 kinase (PI3K) and nuclear factor kappa B (NFκB). 3-(1H-Indol-3-yl)-2,5-dihydro-1H-pyrrole-2,5-dione also inhibits proliferation in different types of cancer cells. It is structurally related to indoleamine 2,3 dioxygenase (IDO), which is an enzyme that breaks down tryptophan into kynurenine. IDO inhibitors have been shown to be neuroprotective in animal models.
