Rosuvastatin is an orally active cholesterol-lowering drug belonging to the class of statins. It reduces levels of LDL cholesterol by inhibiting the synthesis of cholesterol in the liver. The matrix effect is a phenomenon where the concentration of a substance in a sample changes depending on how much fluid there is in that sample. This can be measured by comparing the amount of rosuvastatin found in plasma and serum samples. One study has shown that rosuvastatin plasma concentrations are dose dependent and can vary between individuals due to genetic differences in P450 enzyme activity. This drug has been shown to have clinical relevance for patients with cardiovascular disease or diabetes mellitus type 2 who are taking it for its lipid-lowering effects
