GDF-15 is a protein that has been shown to be elevated in the blood of people with myocardial infarcts and cancer. GDF-15 binds to the alpha subunit of the active form of hepcidin, which is a hormone that regulates iron homeostasis. GDF-15 also interacts with antibodies, inducing mmp-9 activity and inhibiting polymerase chain reactions. GDF-15 may be used as a potential biomarker for atherosclerosis because it is present in atherosclerotic lesions and in cell nuclei. The role of GDF-15 in cancer cells is unclear but it has been shown to stimulate cell proliferation and inhibit apoptosis. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that GDF-15 levels are significantly associated with primary pulmonary hypertension.
