• Descrição: Praziquantel is a drug that is used to treat schistosomiasis, also known as bilharzia. It works by disrupting the membranes of the worms and causing them to release their eggs. Praziquantel is available in tablet form and can be taken by mouth. The drug has a low bioavailability and needs to be given in doses of 40mg/kg or higher for successful treatment. The elimination rate of praziquantel is slow and it has a concentration-time curve with a long terminal phase, which means that its effects are prolonged. Praziquantel has been shown to have an effect on muscle tissue in vivo studies, but it does not bind to or affect muscle polypeptides. In vitro studies have shown that praziquantel binds primarily to free particles instead of proteins.
