It has been shown to be effective in the control of weed growth in cereal crops and for the prevention of dry matter loss due to low light conditions. Benzoylprop-ethyl binds to its target enzymes, such as acetyl-CoA carboxylase, by covalent binding to the thiol group of cysteine residues. This binding prevents the enzyme from catalyzing a reaction and leads to cell death. The low dose required for efficacy suggests that benzoylprop-ethyl may be more selective than other herbicides for use on specific crops.
