2-(Phenylsulfonyl)thiophene is an electron-rich heterocycle. It is a semicarbazone, which is a class of organic compounds that contain an ester and a ketone. 2-(Phenylsulfonyl)thiophene can be synthesized by the condensation reaction of selenadiazole with sulfone. This heterocycle has been used to synthesize sulfones, which are useful in the preparation of pharmaceuticals. 2-(Phenylsulfonyl)thiophene has been shown to possess anti-inflammatory properties in nature as well as being an effective antimicrobial agent against bacterial strains such as S. aureus and C. perfringens.
