4-Amino-4'-(N,N-dimethylamino)stilbene (DAST) is an organic molecule that can be used to create self-assembled monolayers with a hydrophobic character. It is adsorbed onto surfaces by physisorption and chemisorption. DAST has been shown to adsorb on copper and nacl solution, which are both hydrophilic surfaces. The adsorption mechanism for DAST is not entirely clear, but it may involve formation of a hydrogen bond between the amine groups and the surface or through electrostatic interactions. DAST can be used to study the adsorption of other molecules on surfaces because it provides information about the surface properties and chemistry of the substrate.
