Tetradecylsuccinic anhydride is a reactive, bifunctional compound with a nitrogen atom at the center of the molecule. It is used as a cross-linking agent in polyester and alkyd resins to improve their durability as well as to produce other types of polymers. Tetradecylsuccinic anhydride reacts with aromatic compounds such as phenothiazine to form liquid crystals, which have been used in crankcase lubricants. The hydroxyl groups on tetradecylsuccinic anhydride can be used to react with fatty alcohols and hydrocarbons, which are additives for fuels.
