2-[(3S)-pyrrolidin-3-yl]acetic acid is an enantiomer of 2-[(2S)-pyrrolidin-2-yl]acetic acid. It can be synthesized from diethyl acetal, which is prepared from the corresponding ketone and diethyl oxalate. The synthesis starts with the reaction of diethyl oxalate with a ketone in the presence of a base to form an ester. This ester is then hydrolyzed to generate the corresponding alcohol, which reacts in turn with another equivalent of diethyl oxalate. The resulting ester is hydrolyzed by heating in a solvent such as ethanol or methanol to produce 2-[(3S)-pyrrolidin-3-yl]acetic acid as the diethyl ester.
