2-Methyl-3-(3,5-diiodo-4-carboxymethoxybenzyl)benzofuran is a molecule with a sarcoplasmic profile that has been shown to activate muscle cells. This compound has been shown to inhibit the production of ATP in whole-cell voltage clamp experiments on ventricular myocytes. 2-Methyl-3-(3,5-diiodo-4-carboxymethoxybenzyl)benzofuran is also able to inhibit the accumulation of intracellular calcium in these cells, which can lead to cardiac and atrial arrhythmias. The mechanism of this effect is not yet known, but it may be due to its ability to inhibit protein synthesis or oxidative metabolism.
